Senior Principal Lethality, Warheads Engineer

Highly successful Defence Organisation based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire is currently looking to recruit a Senior Principal Lethality / Warheads Engineer.

The candidate must be eligible for UK MoD clearance for access to the appropriate security level.

The salary on offer is £Negotiable + Outstanding benefits.

Job Description:

Manage small team in the specialist area of Lethality Modelling, incorporating particular responsibility for defining/delivering the technical aspects of Warheads.
Reporting functionally to Head of Lethality & Warheads, and to project (CAMM) Lethal Mechanism Manager. Deputising where appropriate

Duties include:

  • Manage small team of specialist lethality & warhead engineers
  • Deputise for Head of Lethality & Warheads as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain team resource plans of up to 2 years in duration, and lead the team to achieve project goals. Rapidly adapting to changing project demands and ensuring efficient utilisation of resources available
  • Manage and report against team’s work programmes to ensure team delivers to appropriate processes, etc.
  • Achieve lethality tasks on major programmes, which are a crucial stage in the customer acceptance of products, therefore has a visible impact on business success.
  • Provide functional guidance to the team, approving reports for studies conducted by the team and ensuring the technical excellence of the team’s products.
  • Influence internal and external customers to adopt assessment methods that can be met at low risk to the business.
  • Lead and develop the team, by setting objectives to achieve project milestones and improvement plans to increase capability of the group to meet the future needs of the business.
  • Propose and lead investigations into a full range of problems, issues or developments and prepare solutions, by the team. Deriving techniques to analyse highly complex processes in the missile/target end game based on limited ill-defined data. High level of judgement needed to provide practical solutions.
  • Develop strategy for lethality & warhead research, tools and processes to meet future project requirements

Experience required:

  • Degree level or equivalent, with experience of engineering, relevant to lethality and warheads or a related defence sector
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team
  • Proven experience of project management skills and techniques, including external sub-contractors on development programmes
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Specialist knowledge of lethality modelling and fuzing techniques and tools (eg MATLAB, Autodyn, SplitX), plus associated system performance studies.
  • Specialist knowledge of warhead design, qualification programmes, warhead trials, explosive chains, safety and arming systems
  • Ability to travel to Germany or France on regular basis
  • Understanding of the product lifecycle for defence equipment, and good knowledge of defence standards and related specifications
  • Commercial and financial awareness
