MASS started as a consultancy company 25 years ago supplying scientific, mathematical and technical expertise. Today, specialist technical skills - indeed some of the people - still remain at the core of the company, allowing MASS to offer technical support across a wide skill base.

 

Primary Business Areas

  • Electronic Warfare. EW system requirements; EW system performance analysis; modelling & simulation; EWOS definition and implementation; Operational support, Database design; Technical audits; Technical procurement advice; Creation of EW Operational Support Establishments (EWOSE).
  • Technology & innovation. Development and integration of electronic systems; Secure communications; Real-time software; DSP; FPGA; Prototyping; Qualification for flight & harsh environments; Security accreditation; Spectrum monitoring; and Recording & analysis.
  • Information Systems. Information systems design and integration of information services in highly secure facilities; Modelling and Analysis; Software development; Network integration (WAN, LAN, SWE); Information assurance; IT management and support.

Other Skill Areas

  • Aerodynamics. MASS has a long track record of aerodynamics work including: Design of a VTOL UAV; Aircraft performance assessment; Weapons stores carriage design; Aeroelastic analysis; Guided weapons aerodynamics and control; wind tunnel testing definition and results analysis. MASS uses classical methods of analysis augmented by CFD and CAD (see below).

  • CFD & CAD. MASS uses the ANSYS Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software toolset combined with MATLAB-SIMULINK Computer Aided Design (CAD) for most aspects of current aerodynamic design and performance evaluation spanning subsonic to supersonic Mach regimes. Studies to date include platform concept designs and performance assessment studies, missiles, UAVs, Lighter than Air craft (LTA’s) and turbulent wake analysis.

  • Technical Support & Studies. MASS has provided technical support and conducted studies for a number of non-UK companies. These include:
    • Provision of the technical support team to Nexter Systems during the FRES Trials of Truth competition;
    • Technical advice to The Boeing Company during their successful bid to become FRES SoSI;
    • Operational analysis study for The Boeing Company into the relevance of the V-22 Osprey tilt rotor to UK Defence Requirements. The results were presented to high level audiences in Washington DC;
    • A detailed study for BAE Systems (latterly the Carrier Alliance) into the design requirements for an Air Group Management Application in the future aircraft carriers (CVF). The results were applauded for their operational detail and technical thoroughness.
