Giving the next generation the right platform and opportunities to develop and thrive is an integral part of who we are as an organisation. Over the last decade, we’ve worked alongside colleges and universities including University of Lincoln, Air Defence College, Lincoln and Silverstone UTC; to create enrichment programmes that provide young people with a learning platform and exposes them to practical experiences that’ll help shape their future careers.

This summer, we welcomed 2nd year Criminology student from University of Lincoln – Georgia Howlett, for a 10-week work experience at our Lincoln office. It’s the second year in a row a student from the university has spent the summer with our research team. Her dream of building a career as a crime analyst, made this experience within our research team particularly relevant for her development.

Having spent most of her time here shadowing our Research Analyst, Rebecca Hope, Georgia attended workshops on conducting research, communicating findings, exploring methodologies, and applying various research techniques. She also took part in multiple research tasks including a review of the insights from the 2025 Strategic Defence Review (SDR) and what they mean for MASS.

Speaking about her experience, Georgia said, “I really enjoyed my time at MASS, everyone was incredibly welcoming and supportive. I undertook a few different research projects with Rebecca that helped me to think about research in a more business minded way.

My plan coming into the summer, was to determine if a research career was right for me and thankfully this experience has not only solidified that but also given me an insight into what research within a cooperate environment looks like.”

Rebecca also commented on Georgia’s time with us, saying, “It was great having Georgia with us over the summer, her passion for research and willingness to learn made it a worthwhile experience.

Our aim was to give her a good spread of experiences: from practical, real-time research, a level of autonomy to pick interesting topics she’d like to research into, and interview techniques that’ll help her when it comes to applying for jobs in the future. I think she enjoyed it, I certainly did and following her time with us, we’ll continuing to mentor her and offer her support when she needs it.”
