The UK is transitioning to a position of ‘war fighting readiness’ and now, more than ever, we’re seeing the true value of effective strategic and operational training.
The rise of the invisible war
In a tech driven and interconnected world, modern warfare is more complex than any other time in history. The invisible war – aka warfare on the electromagnetic spectrum – has become just as important as physical warfare. It’s no longer just about military artillery, tanks and bombs; it’s also about cyber threat, disinformation, information overload, drones and social media hysteria. To combat this shift, the military training environment must conceptualise and reflect these new layers of reality. By recreating these complexities in a synthetic environment, we can ensure Commanders and their teams are able to train as they would fight.
What’s the answer?
Strategic and operational training can’t be built solely around live exercises – they’re still relevant but limited by scale, cost, and risk. Instead, we need to add a more dynamic and realistic digital environment where exercises can take place at scale, securely and in a cost-effective way. The end game here is to ensure command and staff personnel are ready to respond quickly to unfolding real world events.
Creating a digital sandbox
For over two decades, MASS have been trusted by the UK MOD and other defence organisations to successfully deliver rich, immersive end-to-end strategic and operational training to their personnel. At the heart of that success has been our digital ecosystem, known to our partners as Toolset.
Toolset is a computer information system (CIS) environment that consists of bespoke simulation, exercise planning and observation applications that can be readily deployed to meet training requirements of the customer. Essentially, it’s a digital sandbox in which strategic military exercises can take place. By providing a secure and resilient platform, command personnel can rehearse a range of scenarios that will inform the potential cause and effect of choices they make, all within a safe and controlled environment.
Built for the future
As the world advances and war fighting continues to evolve, there’s no doubt that we’ll see new implementations of this digital eco system. We’ll also see the implementation of more AI and automation technologies in the future, with the aim of streamlining every aspect of military exercise delivery. What won’t change however, is our commitment to delivering relevant, first in class training that ensures our customers will be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to current and emerging threats.
