Bridging the Gap: Why synthetic environments matter for C‑UAS

The character of modern conflict has changed. Low‑cost, widely available Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) such as drones are now routinely used against high‑value military assets. This creates a difficult imbalance: inexpensive threats versus complex, costly defensive systems. When the consequences of failure include loss of life, Counter UAS (C-UAS) solutions must work first time, every time.

Proving that level of assurance is not easy. Live trials are expensive, test ranges are limited, and real‑world conditions are hard to replicate. Layered C‑UAS solutions such as combining kinetic and RF effects, must operate in congested, contested environments, yet traditional testing can only go so far. The question facing defence organisations today is clear: how do you validate performance claims with confidence, before deployment?

At MASS, we believe high‑fidelity Modelling and Simulation (M&S) is the answer.

Seeing the Invisible: The Power of Synthetic Test & Evaluation (T&E)

Modern electronic warfare is complex. Jamming, degraded data links, weather, terrain, and urban clutter all affect C‑UAS performance, but these factors are difficult, costly, or unsafe to recreate in the real world.

Our synthetic T & E environments make the invisible visible. By modelling and visualising the electromagnetic spectrum, we show precisely how systems behave under realistic operational conditions. Sensors and effectors are modelled at the signal‑process level across RF, EO, and IR, generating evidence‑based insight, not simplified abstractions.

Through simulation, we enable:

  • Rapid scenario iteration See without the cost or regulatory constraints of live trials
  • Adversarial realism, using human operators to emulate evolving Red UAS tactics
  • Objective performance assessment across complex, multi‑domain environments

Smarter Use of Real‑World Testing

Synthetic testing doesn’t replace live trials, it strengthens them. By independently assessing vendor claims early, MASS enables organisations to identify exactly what must be tested live and eliminate unnecessary risk and cost.

Live range time is then reserved for what truly matters, such as final kinetic effector validation. As real‑world data is collected, it feeds back into our models, creating a continuously evolving “synthetic twin” that reflects real performance throughout the system’s life.

A Proven Partner in Defence

Our vendor‑agnostic approach ensures objective truth; confirming capability where it exists and challenging it where it doesn’t. Backed by over 40 years of experience supporting the UK MOD and international partners, MASS delivers assurance aligned with MOD JSP 939 and international standards.

In an era of rapidly evolving threats, synthetic environments are no longer optional, they’re essential to delivering trusted, resilient C‑UAS capability.
