The 2025 Strategic Defence Review (SDR) makes clear that the UK and its allies have moved from persistent engagement to full warfighting readiness. This shift demands more than advanced equipment or cutting‑edge autonomous systems; it requires the entire force to transition to high‑intensity conflict at true “wartime pace.”
While technology and procurement often take centre stage, strategic and operational training is the true force multiplier. Without it, integrated units remain individual assets rather than a cohesive, mission‑ready combat system.
Understanding the readiness gap
Achieving superiority requires recognising the difference between two critical tiers of readiness:
- Operational Readiness: The ability to deploy trained personnel and functioning equipment where needed.
- Warfighting Readiness: The advanced capability for a complex system to synchronise multi‑domain operations against an adversary.
The truth is neither can be delivered through equipment alone, both require an Integrated Force capable of detecting, deciding, and deploying quicker than the enemy. This is where an effective training programme that reflects the realities of a modern battlespace – disinformation, cyber threat and other digital complexities, becomes transformative.
MASS and JCAST: Leading the ‘Train as You Fight’ evolution
For over 25 years, MASS has partnered with the Integrated Warfare Centre (IWC) to design, deliver, and analyse large‑scale operational exercises. The recent Joint Venture Exercise (2025) for the Standing Joint Force Headquarters (SJFHQ) shows how, alongside our industry partners and the IWC, we’re continuing to advance the training landscape and ensure forces truly train as they fight.
Drawing on decades of UK doctrine and operational experience, our training integrates generative AI and high‑fidelity spatial technologies from partners like Hadean and Antycip. By adding layers of realism such as social‑media misinformation and mirroring civilian activity, we’re able to ensure commanders are challenged in the Grey Zone as rigorously as on the battlefield.
Building readiness through NATO-Aligned training
With the UK adopting a “NATO First” posture, seamless interoperability is vital. Our training ensures UK and allied forces operate effectively within NATO structures. Using 4C Strategies’ Exonaut platform and advanced synthetic training tools, we enable commanders and HQs to train together from multiple locations without the cost of large-scale live exercises.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 SDR is clear: readiness is the nation’s priority. As the UK advances toward the Digital Targeting Web, the demand for sophisticated, technology‑enabled training needs to accelerate.
Strategic and operational training is no longer a support activity, it’s a core pillar of national security. Through JCAST, MASS will continue to ensure that the UK and its allies are not only ready to deploy but ready to prevail.
